Driving Instructions 

(San Jose to Las Ventanas del Mar)

The drive to Las Ventanas del Mar from the San Jose airport takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. The drive is mostly paved, and is fairly straightforward. However, signage is sometimes lacking. To help you navigate the way, we’ve included detailed instructions as well as key landmarks on the trip from SJO to Las Ventanas del Mar.

Please note, the drive from SJO includes traveling on Autopista del Sol, or Highway 27, which is a toll road. There are several tolls along the way, totaling about $7 or $8. Please Plan accordingly.

Detailed Directions from SJO Airport to Las Ventanas: (Note: When driving in Costa Rica, be aware that there are a lot of one-way bridges.

CEDA” means that you are to yield.)
Once you leave the airport, follow the road straight, towards San Jose.

If you are renting a car, ask them to direct you towards San Jose and Escazu when you leave the lot.

Heading out, follow the signs to San Jose and Escazu.You will stay on this road for about 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic.

You will take a RIGHT at an intersection (with traffic lights)...there will be a McDonalds on the far left-hand corner (on the other side of the intersection). And, on the right side of the intersection you will see a tall blue sign that says “Universal”. This is the Autopista del Sol or Highway 27. This is a toll road and the there are a few different tolls along the way, all totaling about $7 or $8.

Continue straight on the Autopista del Sol without exiting and follow the signs for Caldera and Puntarenas. Once you get to Puntarenas, the Autopista del Sol will turn into Highway 1. Once you are past Puntarenas and on Highway 1, follow the signs to Liberia.

After the Autopista del Sol turns into Highway 1 in Puntarenas, follow the detailed directions below to get to Nicoya, then Samara/Carrillo:

Do not turn off Highway 1 until you come to Limonal. Here you will turn left towards the Puente La Amistad de Taiwan.

Landmark: There is a Shell gas station on the left, and a restaurant called Tres Hermanas on the opposite corner (look for the giant bull). Turn left here.

Cross over the Taiwan bridge, and travel until the road comes to a T. From the gas station to the T is Approx. 48K. Turn right towards Nicoya.

Landmark: Turn right at the T-intersection towards Nicoya.

Turn left towards Nicoya at the next main intersection that you come to. There will be a flashing light at this intersection. This is Approx. 13K from your previous turn.

Landmark : Main intersection to Nicoya. Turn left.

Take road directly through Nicoya. Once through the town of Nicoya, follow the road until it dead ends into another T-intersection. Turn right. Approx. 13K

Landmark: Look for this intersection... note the storefront may have changed appearance. Turn right.

Follow this road until you pass the gas station on your left. This is the last stop before Las Ventanas – fill up if you need to! Approx. 19K

Landmark: Look for the gas station on your left. You’re about 20 minutes from Las Ventanas!

Continue on this road until you enter the town of Samara. Turn at the first left. There is a sign pointing to Samara’s Budget office and to Playa Carrillo. If you dead end into the beach, you have gone too far

Drive approx. 4 kilometers towards Carrillo. You will see Playa Carrillo on your right, lined with palm trees. Halfway down the beach road, take a left on the dirt road across from the beach parking area (4 wheel drive recommended).

Continue up the mountain to Las Ventanas del Mar. In about 2 kilometers the road forks and you stay to the left.

In a few hundred yards you will see the front gate. Welcome to Las Ventanas del Mar!
